1, 2, 3s of Time Management
Time Management is similar to money or diet management. If you are looking to make a change, you need to catch a new vision of yourself, monitor your behavior and let go of bad habits. Unlike money and food, there is no way to get your time back. In this course, we will focus on Vision, Current Strategies and Habits and then, review some tips on more productive use of the time we have.
First you must ask yourself is what is your Vision? Most people arrive at this course and want to go straight to the tips because they think that is all they need. They figure that they are on the right road but they just do not drive as well as they could. What they do not realize is that they have never figured in a destination so when they have to make choices that affect their time, they choose opposite of their true priorities. For example, it is easy enough to “Write a To-Do List” but we end up doing what we are in the mood for or what seems easiest instead of focusing on what is truly important. Your vision should be a picture ideal of what you aspire to be doing in the not so distant future. It should have measurable and time bound requirements that are relevant and reasonable. We call these SMART goals. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time Bound). We will conduct a vision focus activity to get started.
Next, it is time to run a diagnostics on your current manner of handling work, personal and rest time. We are always challenged by the ever changing demands of our careers and relationships as well as the constraints of managing our health. Let us take a calorie count, if you will, on how much time you spend each hour Monday through Sunday. We will discuss your energy levels, the kinds of tasks you do, as well as confront some of the “time stealers” that often frustrate your ability to get tasks done. For example, it could be the way you handle ’emergencies’ and it could be that you think you must do certain tasks at a certain time because that is when everyone else does. Let us dispel these compulsions!
Now we are ready to consider our new mindset and what new habits should replace the former unproductive manner of getting things done. First, we will set up an environment that makes time management more convenient. Second, we will look at how to manage technology versus being managed by the blackberry or ring of the telephone. Third, we will consider the interpersonal strategies that will give us peace about pursuing our Vision as well as making a great impression with others.
The 1, 2, 3s of Time Management are Vision, Assessment, and Mindset. Life will continue to throw curve balls so we can never do these 1, 2, 3’s enough. Taking a Time Management course is great way to recover your sense of control and confidence. Let’s get rid of that excuse ‘that’s just me’ and become the “new me” every day step by step. 1, 2, 3- Are you ready?
